Introduction to Physics (PHYS 1100)

Total Credits: 4
Lecture Credits: 3
Lab Credits: 1

Description: Introduction to Physics is an introduction to basic principles of physics and how these principles explain everyday phenomena. You will have the opportunity to explore a basic science course before enrolling in advanced science courses. Minneapolis College offers the lecture portion of this course both on campus and online. The lab portion of this course is required and includes two hours of lab per week, which must be taken on campus.

Topical Outline:
1. Review of linear graphs - linear equations - area equations
2. Position, displacement, velocity and momentum
3. Impulse and conservation of momentum
4. Acceleration, force and projectile motion
5. Work, kinetic energy, potential energy and conservation of energy
6. Uniform circular motion, gravitation, rotational motion and conservation of angular momentum

Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze linear graphs - acquire physical definitions, dimensions and conversions
2. Determine physical quantities using mathematical models and graphs for constant velocity and momentum situations
3. Evaluate the validity of conservation of momentum using mathematical models and graphs - use this knowledge to solve physical problems.
4. Apply knowledge of forces and free body diagrams to determine mathematical equations describing the motion of objects
5. Evaluate the validity of conservation of energy using mathematical models and graphs - use this knowledge to solve physical problems
6. Apply knowledge of circular motion, gravitation, rotational motion and angular momentum to solve physical problems

Prerequisites:  Placement into MATH 1110 or completion of MATH 0080 or MATH 0088. It is strongly recommended that students have completed MATH 0080 or MATH 0088 with a grade of 'C' or higher.
