Description:
This course introduces students to Southeast Asia, which is home to many ethnic groups rich in cultural and religious diversity. You will learn about various cultures including, for example, Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian, Indonesian, Filipino, and Malaysian. You will study their history through examining a variety of art forms from different historical periods and religious influences, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam, and Indigenous belief systems. Through readings, visuals and discussions, you will understand the fundamental values, beliefs, and practices of the peoples of this region, as well as their contributions to and interactions with other Asian and Western regions.

4. Integration of Islam in Southeast Asia
5. Encountering the West: Effects of Western Colonialism
6. Local and global connections: our local ties with Southeast Asia
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an ability to identify the major ethnic groups in terms of their origins, their linguistic and cultural traditions, and their religious practices
2. Recognize the major differences and similarities among the selected cultures, such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and so on
3. Identify the major outside influences from India and China on various Southeast Asian art works as well the elements of indigenous cultures
4. Recognize the impact of Western colonization on Southeast Asian cultures, as seen in the realms of arts, economy, traditional value systems and practices, and so on
5. Demonstrate an improved understanding of the major cultural values, religious beliefs, and peoples’ interactions with the global and local communities in both ancient and modern Southeast Asia
