Description:
This course surveys major religious traditions of the East and West, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. You may study other religions depending on the special interests of the instructor and students. You will use various approaches, including historical and comparative, as well as experiential. Upon completion you will know of the origins, history, beliefs, and practices of the religions studied. You will be able to apply your knowledge of the religions covered to current critical world issues, such as peace and violence, gender relations, environment and globalization.

1. Introduction to Religious Studies
2. Eastern Religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism)
3. Judaism
4. Christianity
5. Islam
Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the complexity and diversity of the origins, history, and contemporary experiences of the religions studied
2. Identify and engage at least five core beliefs or attitudes of each family of religions studies
3. Describe at least three core religious practices and explain the significance of those practices to the followers of that family of religions
4. Apply knowledge of at least four families of religion to at least two current critical world issues (such as: peace and violence, gender relations, the environment, globalization, human rights, religious pluralism, etc.)
5. Develop a familiarity with perspectives of interfaith dialogue and pluralism
