Description:
This course introduces you to the literature of Europe, Africa and Latin America from ancient to modern times. You will read, discuss, and write about short stories, novels, poems, and religious and philosophical literature from Europe, Africa, and Latin America. You will gain insight into the commonalities of human experience, as well as the diversity of human life and expression, in those regions. You will come to understand how ethnic and cultural differences influence human expression.
Topical Outline:
1. History and Story: reality vs. fiction; fiction and meta-fiction
2. Cultural traditions of Africa and Latin America
3. Post-Colonialism: Overlapping territories and combined histories
4. Cultural hegemony, resistance, and revolution
5. Interpret literature through the biographical, historical, and cultural influences that have impacted its production
6. Write essays about the literature which demonstrate an understanding of rhetorical strategies
Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze the connections and disjunctions between the reader and the cultures studied
2. Analyze and discuss a piece of literature in writing, using appropriate literary terminology
3. Make comparisons between literary works of different cultures and different times: to discern similarities and differences in form and content
4. Gain an insight not only to the cultures unfamiliar to them, but also to their own
