Description:
This course introduces you to the literature of Asia and the Middle East from ancient to modern times. You will read, discuss, and write about short stories, novels, poems, and religious and philosophical literature from the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. You will gain insight into the commonalities of human experience, as well as the diversity of human life and expression in Asia and the Middle East. You will come to understand how ethnic and cultural differences influence human expression.
Topical Outline:
1. Philosophical and religious traditions of Asia and Middle East
2. Functions of literature in society and public roles of writers
3. The art of poetry practiced in different cultures
4. The art of prose--classic and modern
5. Intercultural influences reflected in literary works
Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand various Asian and Middle Eastern cultures through literary works, and to recognize different values, life styles, and ways of thinking
2. Demonstrate the ability to appreciate literatures of different cultures and different times, and to learn how to look for relevant background information to enhance their understanding of a particular piece of literature
3. Analyze and discuss a piece of literature in writing, using appropriate literary terminology
4. Make comparisons between literary works of different cultures and different times: to discern similarities and differences in form and content
5. Gain an insight not only to the cultures unfamiliar to them, but also to their own
