Description:
This course covers a variety of short stories from authors from around the world and explores the texts through critical analysis. You will learn about the basic elements common to all short stories. You will also consider the cultural and national contexts of specific stories and identify significant details, patterns, and cultural values and assumptions. In developing critical responses, you will achieve a greater understanding of literature and yourself.
Topical Outline:
1. The craft of the story: settings, character, plot, point of view, symbol, theme, style.
2. Analysis of specific stories, including those from a variety of historical, cultural, and global contexts.
3. Compare and contrast social, political, and linguistic characteristics
4. Exploring stories by authors from various backgrounds with the aim of understanding one's position in a global society
Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze a text using the appropriate vocabulary
2. Articulate an understanding of a short story as an outgrowth of its author and the society in which it was produced
3. Make connections between literature and social issues
4. Understand their role as world citizens and their resultant responsibilities
