Description:
This course explores important concepts in painting. While most of the emphasis is on painting, lectures and critiques allow for some investigation of painting in a historical context. This course defines painting in a broad sense and allows for an exploration of both traditional and nontraditional methods. Acrylic paint is the medium used. The course is designed to help students with all levels of experience. Students are responsible for purchasing some materials. Please contact faculty for approximate cost of materials and supplies.
Topical Outline:
1. Introduction to the use of a diverse group of painting techniques
2. Explore learning resources in painting via museums and galleries
3. Basic painting principles: composition, value, mark making, texture, color and the connection between image and content of that image
4. Traditional and nontraditional painting methods to introduce expression in painting
5. Begin to develop personal expression / aesthetic
6. Develop a personal painting portfolio
Learning Outcomes:
1. Observe and understand painting as it relates to the museum and gallery system(s)
2. Articulate knowledge of diverse painting methods and materials: watercolor, gouache, acrylic and oil
3. Practice basic painting principles: composition, value, mark making, texture, color and he connection between image and content of that image
4. Developing one’s own personal aesthetic
5. Compose critical responses to one’s own and other’s art work
6. Develop a individualized painting portfolio
