Description:
This course will introduce you to the culture of Deaf people in America and around the world. You will develop a greater understanding of the cultural differences, norms, habits and values of both Deaf and hearing cultures and how these affect the ways people relate to one another between cultures. You do not need to know American sign language to take this course.
Topical Outline:
1. Defining Deaf Culture
2. History of Deafness and the evolution of treatment of Deaf people by society
3. The evolution of language in the Deaf Community
4. The interaction between Deaf and hearing cultures
5. Exposure to and observation of Deaf Culture
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that make up a culture
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of Deaf Culture and its evolution
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of attitudes and teaching methods that have affected Deaf children and Deaf culture
4. Identify areas of misunderstanding between Deaf and hearing cultures and how to bridge the cultural gap
