Description:
Working in a time and place shaped by George Floyd’s murder and the subsequent uprisings, you will conduct place-based work that seeks to strengthen the relationship between Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and refugee Minnesota communities and the college. In this course, you will explore how the college might facilitate, rather than hamper, breath for Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. You may address these questions through art installations, photography, ethnography, performance, storytelling, language learning and recovery, historical interpretation, and qualitative research. In short, you will work to transform the college and support its full potential to be a site of justice.
Topical Outline:
1. Murder of George Floyd and subsequent response to this tragedy in the communities most effected.
2. Protest, organizing, activism, arts, politics, etc.
3. Historical and current systems of oppression in Minnesota (policing and criminal justice, employment, health care access, housing, etc.) that made atrocity of the George Floyd murder and others like it possible;
4. Minneapolis College history and political, social, economic underpinnings as a historically white institution now serving but not necessarily matriculating majority BIPOC students;
5. Review of foundational articles, short stories, poems, etc. in ethnic studies, history, media studies, etc.; storytelling and art-making techniques in Popular Education.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Critically analyze a text (document, film, mural, etc.) in terms of its meaning in context, impact in various communities, and response generated.
2. Create their own text (document, film, mural, etc.) that expresses an argument or set of arguments about a social justice issue in Minnesota.
3. Articulate a social history of Minneapolis College, from the perspective of BIPOC students and community members.
4. Gather stories with and from one or more marginalized local communities and present them in a collaborative context.
