Foundation 3D Design (ARTS 1145)

Description: This course covers concepts concerning the principles of design as they apply to elements of three-dimensional art. You will learn to use a variety of materials and techniques to build the foundation of three-dimensional expression. You will spend six to eight hours a week outside of class doing studio work.

Topical Outline:
1. Survey of the qualities of three-dimensional design as it relates to a visual arts practice
2. Survey of the basic three-dimensional design theory and principles
3. Introduction to tools and materials used in creating three dimensional designs
4. Response to works of art in history as it applies to three-dimensional design

Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply the basic vocabulary and aesthetic concerns of three-dimensional (3-D) artwork to analysis of 3-D art.
2. Demonstrate understanding of formal concerns of 3-D design as well as form and content, through a visual portfolio of hands-on projects.
3. Analyze historic and contemporary trends in 3-D art.
4. Demonstrate an increased appreciation of the vital role and value art and design have on culture.
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of their personal artwork and the work of others through the critique process.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety issues within the discipline.

Prerequisites:  Students are responsible for purchasing some materials. Please contact faculty for approximate cost of materials and supplies.
