Healing Traditions in our Diverse Community (HLTH 1305)

Description: This course explores the traditional and indigenous healing traditions embraced by the largest ethnic/minority groups in the Twin Cities’ metropolitan area. Similarities and differences among shamans, healers, and medicine people are discussed. Through a variety of learning methods, you will explore healing paradigms that differ from your own. You will also gain tools and skills to research the historical healing traditions from your own ethnic background.

3. Medicine people throughout history
4. Unique qualities of shamanic healers
5. Healing traditions of our neighbors
6. Respect in Action: honoring diverse healing traditions in our personal life and community

Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognize that science-based healthcare is one healing paradigm
2. Describe similarities and differences in healers from diverse traditions
3. Identify and respect diverse healing paradigms
4. Demonstrate a beginning knowledge of the student's own traditional healing heritage

Prerequisites:  Placement score into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
