Health and Aging (HLTH 2205)

Description: This course investigates the aging process. You will analyze the aging process physiologically and behaviorally and determine how well you are aging. You will mindfully engage the aging community and investigate various health systems and options for the elderly. You will also develop and apply effective strategies for healthy aging.

Topical Outline:
1. Our Nation's Elders
2. Aging theories and physiological changes in the body with age
3. Behavioral and health concerns with the elderly (chronic illnesses, diseases, and conditions; acute illnesses and accidents; mental health; medication use)
4. Personal prevention and health promotion such as goal setting, nutrition, physical activity, mindfulness, sexuality
5. The community health care systems of the elderly
6. Dying, death and grief

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop and apply coping strategies to balance one's health now and gain resiliency for the future
2. Apply mindful awareness of personal attitudes and belief systems about their body, mind, spirit, and their role in the context of their community
3. Investigate and articulate healthy systems and options for the elderly
4. Identify and apply key terms

Prerequisites:  Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
