Infectious Diseases: An Application to Everyday Life. (HLTH 2210)

Description: In this course, you will learn about infectious diseases and disease concepts, with emphasis on prevention and control of infectious diseases in the individual, family and community. You will study a broad spectrum of infectious-disease topics, including disease causes, transmission, outbreaks, and personal and family protection. You will debate the influence of geography, culture, politics and economic factors on infectious diseases. In class, you will discuss common diseases such as influenza, food-borne illnesses, and sexually transmitted diseases; as well as more exotic diseases, such as pandemic influenza, newly emerging diseases, and diseases caused by bioterrorism.

1. Germs
2. Immune system
3. Infections and diseases (water and food borne, vectore borne, sexually transmitted, animal-human, pandemic influenza, blood-borne, and etc.)
4. Bioterrorism diseases
5. Emergency preparedness for large infectious disease outbreaks
6. Disease control strategies

1. Demonstrate understanding infectious diseases and the role of the individual and society in controlling and preventing them
2. Identify how infectious diseases affect political and economic decisions
3. Evaluate your own behavior regarding disease prevention
4. Understand and articulate the global impact of infectious diseases on the world's populations
5. Understand and identify how various agencies and organizations (government, public health agencies, hospitals, health care providers) interact to track and control infectious diseases

Prerequisites:  Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
