Environmental Issues in Health and Wellness (HLTH 2200)

Description: This course is an introduction to the principles of toxicology and how environmental agents, such as pesticides and pollutants, affect human health, specifically in the areas of disease and injury. You will assess your toxicant risk and ecological footprint and use these results to research various methods on how to improve your environmental health, such as sustainable agriculture and green living. This course also explores how you can use the environment to promote health and actually heal the mind and body.

Topical Outline:
1. Dimensions of wellness, goal setting, and behavior modification concepts
2. Ecological concepts
3. Environmental toxins and the physiological effects of them on human health
4. Environmental health risk assessment
5. Government environmental health policies
6. Methods promoting environmental and how to use the environment for health promotion and healing

Learning Outcomes:
1. Define key terms and concepts
2. Assess their environmental health risk, research what can be done to decrease one's risk and advocate for change for environmental health promotion
3. Assess how their behaviors impact the environment and devise and implement a plan of action to change one behavior
4. Demonstrate use of the environment for health promotion and healing

Prerequisites:  Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
