Healthy Strategies for Weight Management (HLTH 1173)

Description: This course will include all aspects relating to managing weight, including causes of weight gain, health risks and lifestyle. You will explore the disadvantages of engaging in unhealthy approaches to weight management. You will participate in a variety of healthy weight-reduction practices including basic nutrition, exercise, behavior modification, stress management and communication. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Basic nutrition, food shopping and label reading; food preparation
2. Techniques of fitness required for weight loss and weight management
3. Techniques to critically evaluate popular or fad diets
4. Nutritional assessment methods to evaluate current nutritional status and to develop a personal weight management program
5. Behavior modifications techniques; dealing with change, critical thinking, goal setting
6. Role of stress management, communication, self-knowledge and coping skills

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop goals for assessing eating and exercise patterns
2. Examine the role of physical activity in weight management, identify exercise barriers and learn strategies for overcoming, and demonstrate aerobic physical activities
3. Demonstrate basic nutrition principles in the development of a healthy diet
4. Examine risk factors and diseases associated with overweight/obesity and gap in health disparities for people of color
5. Develop coping strategies for stress, change and dealing with social influence associated with weight management
6. Define body mass index and waist circumference and identify indication for use

Prerequisites:  Placement score into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
