Description: This course focuses on coping with the major changes that can occur in life. You will learn about a holistic approach to loss by viewing it as "change and transition." You will understand the theories and stages of grief, which are helpful in the transition to overall health. You will obtain knowledge and tools needed to maintain wellness and make healthy choices when changes occur.

Topical Outline:
1. Life changes that trigger loss and bring about transitions
2. Theories and models on loss and change
3. Distinctions between death, loss, change, transition, transformation and their relationship to the dimensions of health
4. Divergent cultural responses to loss and change
5. Personalized development model around change and loss
6. Ways of making successful transformations

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the various changes in their lives that triggered loss and brought about transitions
2. Explore the theories of grief and loss inclusive of life events and learn how the grief cycle is applied
3. Recognize the distinctions between change, dying and loss and their relationship to the dimensions of health
4. Cite various loss change models to include Kubler-Ross, Wheatley, Prochaska and Bridges
5. Compare and contrast how cultures present in the Minneapolis College community deal with change, dying and loss
6. Develop a personalized change/loss model to ultimately make successful transformations

Prerequisites:  Placement score into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042
