Bridging Community and Personal Health (HLTH 1128)

Description: This course teaches that personal health is more than a series of individual choices; it is universal. You will learn about the community context that shapes the decisions you make about your health. You will learn how to impact environments that do not support health and wellness, and you will clarify your own values, participate on a team, and engage in public work. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Public Health and the intersection of Personal health. Over view on how a Healthy Place affects Healthy People, the Ecological view
2. Historical and current social justice issues in Health and Wellness
3. Civic Engagement and Public Work Concepts. The Citizen-Student
4. Citizen-Student as co-producer of their own health

Learning Outcomes:
1. Clarify attitudes, beliefs, and values that shape personal wellness choices and the Public Health issues that impact them
2. Develop leadership skills infused with an awareness of the complexity of communities
3. Recognize systemic approaches to health and Wellness and the impact they have on individual choices
4. Demonstrate the skills to manage conflict, facilitate participation by all and help find common interest with competing groups
5. Recognize community resources and their uses
