Service-Learning in Special Populations (HLTH 1107)

Description: This course will provide you with experience in individual and group interactions with people that have disabilities. Much of the time during the semester will be done in a service-learning placement. You will find your own community placement, which must be approved for service. You will survey the historical/social context of people with disabilities in America, legislation, terminology and begin to discover your own attitudes and behaviors around a wide range of abilities. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Historic/Social context for people with disabilities
2. Ecological perspective- Empowerment / Universal design
3. Community resources and the role of service and a responsibility as a Citizen-Student
4. Reflection as a tool for self-development and clarity

Learning Outcomes:
1. Examine legal and historic precedent for people with disabilities
2. Develop an appreciation for the defining issues and current status for people with disabilities
3. Identify preferred methods and vocabulary that reflect universal respect
4. Develop the ability to become an advocate for physical activity for all abilities
5. Examine their role as Citizen-Student
