Recreation and Games: Developing Self and Leadership (PHED 1128)

Description: This course will heighten your sense of adventure and fun with activities intended to appeal to mind, body, and spirit. You will participate in a series of individual and group games. You will learn to take appropriate risks and sharpen your problem-solving and conflict-management skills. You will learn to build trust within yourself and with others, learn to cooperate with and support classmates, and enhance your physical fitness and self-confidence. You will apply the learning from this course to other areas of your life and participate in an end-of-the-semester experience. Must be taken A-F.

Topical Outline:
1. Historical context of physical activities-play/work and attitudes and beliefs
2. Adventure education hallmarks: Life skills- Individual, group, and perceived risk
3. Rational decision making, physical mastery, participation and role within a group-facilitation/evaluation
4. Wellness perspectives and the 7 dimensions

Learning Outcomes:
1. Engage in physical activities and articulate an understanding of how the activities relate to fitness components
2. Demonstrate effective conflict management, facilitation, decision making and problem-solving skills
3. Clarify personal attitudes, beliefs, values, abilities, and core beliefs
4. Identify the components of Wellness and how they relate to spiritual, intellectual and physical health and well being
