Description:
This course addresses the affect-oriented aspects of contemporary law enforcement. Specific topics include crime prevention, police-community relations, ethical decision-making, cultural diversity, bias-motivated crimes and interpersonal communications.
Topical Outline:
1. History, evolution, problem solving and proactive policing in community policing
2. Communicating effectively and working with the media
3. Crime prevention, safe neighborhoods and working with youth and gangs
4. Understanding and preventing violence and terrorism
Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify and discuss the primary features of problem solving and proactive policing related to effective community policing
2. Identify and discuss the primary issues surrounding effective communication between the public and the police
3. Identify and discuss the challenges of providing safe neighborhoods, dealing with drugs in the community and working with youth and gangs
4. Identify and discuss the key components of violence and terrorism and their effect on the community
