Description:
This course provides a comprehensive approach to Materia Medica focusing on 25 commonly used herbs. You will receive detailed information about the plants, encompassing both traditional and contemporary understanding of the key therapeutic actions, indications, constituents, cautions, contraindications, dosages and toxicity of each medicinal herb; alongside nomenclature, habitat, morphology and preparation of indicated forms of delivery of the medicinal herb. You will attend field trips to local natural areas to identify plants. You will be introduced to how herbal medicines work to promote health in the organ systems of the body, including the respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems. Must be taken A-F.

1. 1. Design herbal treatments for organ systems; nervous, digestive, muscular/skeletal and respiratory
2. 2. Critically review literature pertaining to traditional and modern uses of plant medicines
3. 3. Construct treatment protocols and expected outcomes of use for 10 medicinal plants
4. 4. Identify key therapeutic actions, indications, constituents, cautions, contraindications, dosages and toxicity of 25 medicinal herbs
Prerequisites:
Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052.
