Introduction to Herbal Medicine (HERB 1100)

Description: Introduction to Herbalism focuses on basic concepts of herbalism including how to research both traditional and modern information pertaining to herbal use, how to examine herb safety and analyze scientific research on herbs. You will learn to assess through research and writing assignments how to choose herbal providers, herbal remedies for personal use, and herbal products. You will be introduced to careers where knowledge of herbalism is used, including; Ethno-botany, product marketing, herb grower, herb manufacturer and health practitioner. You will be introduced to the 24 most commonly used and advertised herbs. Must be taken A-F.

1. 1. Appraise efficacy of herbal medicines through evaluating sources from traditional medicine and scientific research
2. 2. Assess safety and dosage guidelines as well as the harvesting and preparation of 24 of the most common herbs used in the US
3. 3. Evaluate herb manufacturing companies on business practices relating to harvesting, preparing, formulating and labeling herbal products
4. 4. Determine proper herbal medicine labeling and manufacturing based on FDA regulations

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052.
