Tutoring Students in Urban Contexts (EDUC 1170)

Description: This course examines best practices for tutoring urban students in elementary, middle and secondary school settings. You will participate in intensive tutor training and tutor K-12 students. In order to complete this course, you must be able to complete 50-80 hours of tutoring during the semester. All students enrolled in this course will need to complete an application process through a district or charter school, which will include a background check. Must be taken A-F.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify appropriate diagnostic tools, administer them and interpret the data to develop a tutoring plan
2. Explain the components of reading instruction and employ appropriate strategies based on student needs; Categorize student errors and use mathematical problem-solving strategies to build math fluency
3. Evaluate and use a variety of verbal and nonverbal management strategies to keep students focused on the learning
4. Assess student learning as a way to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional strategies
5. Use cultural, gender and ability differences as assets in tutoring instruction
6. Demonstrate the reflective teaching cycle to constantly improve instructional practice and student learning outcomes

Prerequisites:  Placement score into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052
