Description:
This course provides an introduction to the expanded functions legal in Minnesota for a licensed dental assistant to perform. The course will focus on program requirements, and review of anatomy and physiology, dental specialties, dental materials, pharmacology, and microbiology/infection control. The course will also identify the levels of supervision, dental ethics and legal issues as they relate to the Minnesota Dental Practice Act. Must be taken A-F.

1. 1. Define ethics, jurisprudence and the Rules & Regulations, which govern dentistry in MN
2. 2. Identify landmarks of the head, neck and oral cavity
3. 3. Identify regulatory and non-regulatory standards, universal precautions and infection control protocols in dentistry
4. 4. Identify pharmacological agents and their use
5. 5. Determine and record vital signs to aid in assessing medical concerns that could alter treatment and/or prevent a medical emergency situation
6. 6. Identify commonly used dental materials to complete laboratory projects related to the expanded functions
Prerequisites:
Acceptance into the Expanded Functions Dental Assistant program; placement into READ 0200 or placement into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
