Description:
This course addresses typical and atypical child development from birth through age 12. You will examine all developmental domains, including physical, social, emotional, cognitive, language, and creative, as well as consider how development is viewed from differing theoretical perspectives within the context of gender, socioeconomics, and culture. Must be taken A-F.

1. 1. Describe the development of children prenatally to age 12 in all developmental domains
2. 2. Explore the integration of child development and learning, including the ways that early experiences are foundational to future growth
3. 3. Consider the importance of primary relationships in family and care-giving to the development of young children
4. 4. Identify typical patterns of development and consider the ways that teachers must vary practices to support the individual child’s development
5. 5. Identify key aspects of child development theories and apply those concepts to learning activities for children ages birth through age 12
6. 6. Examine connections between child development, developmentally appropriate practices and the current Early Childhood Indicators in Minnesota
