Description:
This course will examine the impact of child development, relationships, culture, and the environment on positive behavioral guidance in early-childhood settings. You will explore strategies for interacting with individual children, small or large groups, and developing caring social communities with a focus on developmental approaches that consider self-discipline as an emerging skill and acknowledges collaboration between school and home settings. Must be taken A-F.

1. 1. Describe developmentally appropriate positive guidance approaches for individuals and groups that encourage healthy peer relationships, a sense of security and self-esteem
2. 2. Identify positive environments and prosocial teaching tools that support the mental and physical health of all children especially during transitions and routines
3. 3. Investigate culturally responsive positive guidance strategies
4. 4. Consider how personal experiences such as trauma and resilience influence behaviors and design environments that support children’s developmentally appropriate behavior choices
5. 5. Examine ways to establish supportive relationships with children and guide them consistently with families, to enhance learning, development, and well-being
6. 6. Foster each child’s development of self-regulation and social interaction skills within the context of child development
Prerequisites:
Placement score into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 and faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
