Introduction to Early Childhood Education (ECED 1200)

Description: This course provides an overview of the Early Childhood profession including: history, program types, regulations, roles, responsibilities, developmentally appropriate practice, play, home-school connections, diversity, community resources, reflective practice, and ethics. You will learn about the multiple aspects and settings of the Early Childhood profession. Must be taken A-F.

1. 1. Explore early childhood developmentally appropriate practices within the context of research-based writings and professional organizations in early childhood education
2. 2. Explore the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of early childhood education and discuss the impact of same on current thoughts and practices
3. 3. Examine different approaches to early childhood education including Minnesota licensing rules related to home and center-based care
4. 4. Examine career opportunities and educational requirements in the early childhood profession
5. 5. Explore the variety of roles and responsibilities educators have in direct care settings
6. 6. Practice using the NAEYC Code of Ethics

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 and faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
