Psychology: Transfer Pathway

Description:

The Psychology Transfer Pathway AA offers students a powerful option: the opportunity to complete an Associate of Arts degree with course credits that directly transfer to designated Psychology bachelor’s degree programs at Minnesota State universities. The curriculum has been specifically designed so that students completing this pathway degree and transferring to one of the seven Minnesota State universities enter the university with junior-year status. All courses in the Transfer Pathway associate degree will directly transfer and apply to the designated bachelor’s degree programs in a related field.

Psychology, the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, is a fascinating and exciting field. Based on the American Psychological Association’s Foundations for Undergraduate Education 2.0 (2013), the Associate of Arts degree includes four major-specific content areas for the Transfer Pathway in Psychology: (a) Knowledge Base in Psychology, (b) Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking, (c) Ethical and Social Responsibility in a Diverse World, and (d) Communications.

*This transfer pathway in Associate of Arts in Psychology will transfer to the following majors:

  • Bemidji State University: Psychology, BA or Psychology, BS
  • Metropolitan State University: Psychology, BA
  • Minnesota State University, Mankato: Psychology, BS
  • Minnesota State University, Moorhead: Psychology, BA
  • Southwest Minnesota State University: Psychology, BA
  • St. Cloud State University: Psychology, BA or Community Psychology, BS
  • Winona State University: Psychology, BA (Option A and Option B)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: FIRST SEMESTER: 

Psychology (Minnesota State Transfer Pathway) Associate of Arts Degree

As governed by Minneapolis College Policy 3.05 and 3.09, students seeking an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Minneapolis College must successfully complete a total of 60 college-level credits as outlined below.

MnTC Requirements: 40 Credits

Students must successfully complete a total of 40 credits of coursework in all MnTC goal areas as follows:

See Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum Competencies for the list of eligible courses. One course may meet more than one MnTC Goal Area; however, credits may only be counted once.

All students pursuing this degree should work closely with their advisor and consult with the intended transfer institution to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives.

Psychology Core Courses

Requirement

A total of four Psychology courses are required to complete the Psychology Transfer Pathway.

 Required:

 PSYC 1110 General Psychology 4 credits, MnTC Goal 5

 And

 PSYC 2100 Statistics for Psychological/Behavioral Sciences 4 credits MnTC Goal 5

 Choose at least two of these courses:

 PSYC 2240 Lifespan Development 4 credits MnTC Goals 5,9

 PSYC 2250 Introduction to Psychological Disorders 3 credits MnTC Goal 5

 PSYC 2260 Social Psychology 3 credits MnTC Goal 5, 9

MnTC GOAL AREA

REQUIREMENT

 MnTC Goal Area 1: Written and Oral Communication

 A minimum of 9 credits, which must include ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110, ENGL 1111, and students must take either:

 CMST 1000 Introduction to Communication  Or

 CMST 1010 Interpersonal Communication

 MnTC Goal Area 2: Critical Thinking

 Any course from MnTC Goal Area 2 or Completion of all other MnTC Goal Areas and 40 MnTC credits.

 INFS 1000 satisfies this requirement

 *MnTC Goal Area 3: Natural Sciences

 MnTC Goal Area 3: A minimum of two courses in different disciplines, one course must have a traditional lab and the other course must have a traditional lab –or- lab-like experience.

 A course in Biology is strongly recommended.

 MnTC Goal Area 4: Mathematics/Logical Reasoning

 A minimum of one course totaling 3 credits

 Students must choose from these courses

 MATH 1110 College Algebra Or

 MATH 1090 Statway Statistics 2 Or

 MATH 1140 Introduction to Statistics Or

 MATH 1150 Statistical Analysis  

 **MnTC Goal Area 5: History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences

 A minimum of three courses, in three different disciplines totaling 9 credits. PSYC courses will satisfy one of the three disciplines. Students will need to take two additional MnTC Goal 5 courses other than Psychology

 **MnTC Goal Area 6: Humanities and Fine Arts

 A minimum of three courses, in three different disciplines totaling 9 credits. A course in Philosophy is strongly recommended

 MnTC Goal Area 7: Human Diversity

 A minimum of one course

 MnTC Goal Area 8: Global Perspective

 A minimum of one course

 MnTC Goal Area 9: Ethical and Civic Responsibility

 A minimum of one course:

 This goal may be satisfied by taking either PSYC 2240 Or PSYC 2260

 MnTC Goal Area 10: People and the Environment

 A minimum of one course

 Additional Required Coursework:

 Health Course

 Choose course(s) from any of the HLTH offerings, a total of two credits is required

 Physical Education Course

 Choose courses from any of the PHED offerings, a total of one credit is required

 Information Studies

 INFS 1000 (meets MnTC Goal Area 2)

 Elective Credits

 The number of elective credits will vary depending on the number of MnTC and required coursework credits a student takes.

Completion Requirements:

Students seeking an A.A. degree must complete ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110 and the Information Literacy requirement within their first 24 college-level credits (those courses are numbered 1000 or above).  It is recommended that students take ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110 and INFS 1000 in the same semester or take ENGL 1111 and INFS 1000 during the same term.

One course may meet more than one MnTC Goal Area; however, credits may only be counted once.

The total credits for each semester will vary depending on which Math, Science and Psychology courses are selected to complete the Psychology (Minnesota State Transfer Pathway).

Students need to complete the entire 40-credit Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) as well as elective credits to reach 60 credits for the Psychology (Minnesota State Transfer Pathway) degree.

* MnTC Goal Area 3: Students must complete a minimum of two courses in two different disciplines, one course must have a traditional lab and the other course must have a traditional lab-or-lab-like experience from MnTC Goal Area 3.

**To complete the Psychology  Transfer Pathway, students must complete at least three courses from three different disciplines in MnTC Goal Areas 5 and 6.

All students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor and consult with the intended transfer institution to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives. You are expected to meet with your advisor on a regular basis to ensure courses are taken in an order that will lead to efficient and successful completion of the required coursework. Your advisor will assist you in choosing courses that will help you progress toward successful completion of your declared major.
