Description:

The Liberal Arts program offers courses to complete the A.A. degree in Liberal Arts or the Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum (MNTC). MnTC is an agreement among all Minnesota two and four year public colleges and universities to help students transfer between schools. The MnTC is a commitment by these schools to accept specified general education coursework transferred from other participating institutions. Completion of the 40-credit MnTC at Minneapolis College can be applied toward the A.A. in Liberal Arts at Minneapolis College or transferred to another school. Planful selection of additional coursework at Minneapolis College enables a student to complete the first 2 full years toward a baccalaureate degree at another college or university.


COURSE REQUIREMENTS: FIRST SEMESTER: 

Associate in Arts Degree

As governed by Minneapolis College Policy 3.05 and 3.09, students seeking an associate of arts (A.A.) degree from Minneapolis College must successfully complete a total of 60 college-level credits as outlined below.

MnTC Requirements: 40 Credits

Students must successfully complete a total of 40 credits of coursework in all MnTC goal areas as follows:

MnTC GOAL AREA

REQUIREMENT

 MnTC Goal Area 1: Written and Oral Communication

 A minimum of 9 credits, which must include ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110, ENGL 1111, as well as an eligible Communication Studies (CMST) course

 MnTC Goal Area 2: Critical Thinking

 Any course from MnTC Goal Area 2 or Completion of all other MnTC Goal Areas and 40 MnTC credits

 MnTC Goal Area 3: Natural Sciences

 MnTC Goal Area 3: A minimum of two courses in different disciplines, one course must have a traditional lab and the other course must have a traditional lab –or- lab-like experience

 MnTC Goal Area 4: Mathematics/Logical Reasoning

 A minimum of one course totaling 3 credits

 MnTC Goal Area 5: History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences

 A minimum of three courses, in three different disciplines totaling 9 credits

 MnTC Goal Area 6: Humanities and Fine Arts

 A minimum of three courses, in three different disciplines totaling 9 credits. ENCW and ENLT are considered one discipline for the purposes of Goal six

 MnTC Goal Area 7: Human Diversity

 A minimum of one course

 MnTC Goal Area 8: Global Perspective

 A minimum of one course

 MnTC Goal Area 9: Ethical and Civic Responsibility

 A minimum of one course

 MnTC Goal Area 10: People and the Environment

 A minimum of one course

 Additional Required Coursework:

 Health Course

 One course from any of the HLTH offerings

 Physical Education Course

 One course from any of the PHED offerings

 Information Studies

 INFS 1000 (meets MnTC Goal Area 2)

 Elective Credits

 The number of elective credits will vary depending on the number of MnTC and required coursework credits a student takes

 TOTAL CREDITS:

Completion Requirements:

Students seeking an A.A. degree must complete ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110 and the Information Literacy requirement within their first 24 college-level credits (those courses are numbered 1000 or above).  It is recommended that students take ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110 and INFS 1000 in the same semester or take ENGL 1111 and INFS 1000 during the same term.

One course may meet more than one MnTC Goal Area; however, credits may only be counted once.
