Description: This course will expand your knowledge of human cultures and the human imagination through an introductory study of theatrical history, classical dramatic literature, and theatrical eras in broad social, political, and economic context. You will read plays from a wide range of time periods, geographic areas, theatrical styles, and subjects as they relate to the human condition and a cultural history of theater. Topics covered will include theater's origins, how historians reconstruct the elements of theater, dramatic play structure, acting, productions, and the visual elements of theatrical performance from an historical perspective.

2. 2. Evaluate classical plays from a critical perspective
3. 3. Understand and articulate in writing the social, political, and economic impact of theatre from an historical perspective
4. 4. Construct arguments in reaction to classical dramatic literature in performance
5. 5. Compare and contrast genres, styles, and periods of theatrical history

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
