Description: This course provides you with the opportunity to study one of the great African-American theater companies still performing today, the Penumbra Theater Company. You will learn about the history, operations, philosophy, mission and artistic goals, and the current season of plays at one of the nation¿s premier theaters committed to exploring the African-American experience. You will explore in class the script of a current play in production at Penumbra, then go see that play in performance there and learn how to write a play review about what you saw.

1. 1. Articulate the history of Penumbra Theatre from its origins in 1976 to present
2. 2. Explain and describe the mission and artistic goals of Penumbra Theatre, its structural organization, programming, and its place as a leadership role in theatres devoted to the African American Experience, nationally and internationally
3. 3. Identify and discuss Penumbra Theatre's current season of plays
4. 4. Purchase a ticket for a current production at Penumbra Theatre, visit the theatre, attend and report on the performance
5. 5. Articulate a written personal response in play review format to that performance

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
