Introduction to Theater (THTR 1131)

Description: This is a lecture-discussion course that explores the diversity of the live theater experience through reading assignments, attendance at live theatrical performances, video viewing and in-class discussions. Topics will include multicultural plays and dramatic structure; audience demographics; group response to live theater; local theater-going; and an exploration of the political, social and economic impact of theater in contemporary society. You will learn to become a more informed theater-goer and to gain individual awareness of being in the audience.

1. 1. Recognize and identify actors and directors in contemporary theatre
2. 2. Appreciate the historic origins of theatre including storytelling and ritual
3. 3. Appreciate various roles of theatre personnel: the scenic and lighting designer, sound designer, costume designer
4. 4. React to live theatre performances and videos in both written and oral responses to plays
5. 5. Recognize characteristics of dramatic literature including comedy and tragedy

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
