Sound Arts 2: Advanced Recording and Sync (SNDA 1320)

Total Credits: 3
Lecture Credits: 2.00
Lab Credits: 1.00

Description: This course extends your theoretical base in sound with exploration of advanced topics in analog signal flow, gain-staging and processing, as well as the foundations of nonlinear digital recording, sampling, synthesis, editing, and time coding. Theory moves to practical lab experience in live multitrack recording and mixing. You will do individual and group recording projects in MCTC sound studios involving music, dialogue and effects; work with commercial production music; and tie sound projects to video or film.

Topical Outline:

Learning Outcomes:
1. 1. Illustrate and apply the ability to control and troubleshoot the entire signal path; from inputs, to outboard processing, to recorders
2. 2. Choose which type of processors to use, and how to integrate them into the signal path
3. 3. Distinguish the unique characteristics of MIDI from those of audio, and apply them through sequencing operations to create artwork
4. 4. Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the fundamental nature of all three domains, and the keys to working in them
5. 5. Produce a finished artwork that integrates control of both the analog and digital domains
6. 6. Integrate the material of the course with aesthetic growth, through a range of short production projects, both musical and non-musical
