Description: This course is intended to give an overview of the American criminal justice system, with specific review of the roles and responsibilities of the police, courts, corrections institutions and the democratic foundations upon which the system is based. In addition, the course is appropriate for those who want to learn more about career options in the areas of criminal justice.

1. 1. Identify and analyze the historical and constitutional foundations of criminal justice in the United States
2. 2. Develop an understanding of the relationship and interactions of the various components of the criminal justice system
3. 3. Identify past, present, and future critical issues facing the criminal justice system
4. 4. Prepare students as citizens to be critical consumers of crime and criminal justice data
5. 5. Critically analyze contemporary responses to crime in our society

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
