Description: This course examines the role of the consumer in the U.S. economy and the basic process of decision-making in relation to spending on the major consumer items. The course will also examine the role of industry, government, and protective agencies in relation to the consumer. Topics covered will include: budgeting, credit, food, clothing, housing, transportation, taxes, advertising, fraud, protective agencies and current problems.

1. 1. Describe the major features of the economy and discuss the relationship of the household to the economy
2. 2. Demonstrate or explain how to prepare financial statements and use them in financial planning
3. 3. Demonstrate or explain the use of cash and credit management to achieve financial goals
4. 4. Effectively manage tax liabilities and make sound decisions about major purchases

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
