Description: This course addresses typical and atypical child development from birth through age 12. You will examine all developmental domains, including the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, language, gender and cultural development, as well as consider how development is viewed from differing theoretical perspectives. Must be taken A-F.

Learning Outcomes:
1. 1. Describe the development of children and youth in the following areas: physical, social/emotional, language, cognitive, sexual, temperament and influences on development, cultural, identity and moral development
2. 2. Identify and describe major theories for studying children and youth such as those proposed by Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey, Gardner, etc.
3. 3. Examine connections between child development and developmentally appropriate practice
4. 4. Examine connections between child development and current standards in the State of Minnesota

Prerequisites: 

Placement score into ENGL 1110 or completion of ENGL 0900 or ENGA 0900 or ESOL 0051.
