Description:  This course is an introduction to the image editing hardware and software used in the professional photography industry and deals primarily with what to do with the image after it has been captured. You will use Adobe Light room to create a professional digital workflow as you edit RAW files and prepare them for wide variety of output options.
Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052 or Instructor approval (Non-PHDI Majors must meet Reading placement).


Co-requisites: 

PHDI 1110, PHDI Instructor approval for Non-PHDI Majors.

Location Portraiture (PHDI 1105)

Description:  This course examines issues central to photographing successful portraits on location. You will learn techniques for lighting and controlling color in location settings while making aesthetic decisions based on visual elements a location provides. You will also explore ways to engage with subjects to create meaningful portraits. You will participate in hands-on location portrait photo shoots exploring issues of safety relevant to location photography. Course shooting assignments will introduce you to working in a variety of settings while you prepare a location portraiture portfolio. Must be taken A-F.

Digital Photography 1 (PHDI 1110)

Description:  This course is an introduction to the image capture process and digital workflow using digital SLR cameras. You will capture JPEG and RAW image files as you learn how to navigate camera menus, calculate exposure, control white balance, depth of field, subject motion, focal length and use basic photographic compositional techniques. You will develop a practical photographic vocabulary and be introduced to career opportunities within the professional photography field.
Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052. PHDI Instructor approval for Non-PHDI Majors.

Lighting 1 (PHDI 1120)

Description:  This course covers basic lighting techniques for both traditional silver-based and digital photography. You will learn the control of the five lighting elements of quality, direction, ratio, quantity and color as they relate to creating three-dimensional contrast. You will explore the application of natural and tungsten lighting in the studio and on location. You must provide your own digital SLR and light meter for this course.
Prerequisites: 

Placement score into READ 0200 or placement score into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052. Instructor approval for Non-PHDI majors. Non-PHDI majors must meet reading placement.

Description:  This course follows up on the skills and techniques learned in Lighting 1. Major emphasis of this course is placed on the setup, operation, and utilization of studio flash photography equipment and accessories. Assignments and course content will allow you to experience studio flash both in the studio and on location. Students must provide their own digital SLR camera and light meter for this course.

Photo Assisting Basics (PHDI 1242)

Description:  This course introduces students to the practical duties and responsibilities of a professional photo assistant. You will get hands on experience with many different lighting and camera systems and the grip tools used in studio and location photography. You will also exposed to the expectations and demands of photo assisting through field trips, guest speakers and real life opportunities to assist program staff and advanced students working photographers.

Description:  This course is a continuation of the basics learned in Digital Photo I. You will capture RAW image files tethered to a computer in the studio utilizing the latest image capture software and hardware as you further your understanding of a professionally managed digital workflow. Through field trips and guest speakers you will see firsthand how these tools are used in the professional photography industry.

Location Flash Photography (PHDI 1292)

Description:  This course explores the different types of portable lighting devices and controls. Emphasis will be placed on using dedicated, through the lens (TTL) metering flash devices both on and off the camera. You will learn how to calculate desired exposures as you utilize TTL flash units, in-camera and radio slave controls, high-speed flash sync. and multiple flash off camera lighting set ups. This course will replicate real world scenarios encountered by professional photographers. You will learn about the power and versatility of the latest TTL dedicated flash units and related technology will provide you with an indispensable lighting tool. Must be taken A-F.

Photographic Design (PHDI 2020)

Description:  This course deals with the relationship of subject matter, objects, movement and time within a camera frame for both still image and motion capture. You will utilize photographic compositional techniques and design elements as you explore a variety of subject matter including people and portraits, landscapes, architecture, still life and tabletop as you prepare a digital media portfolio that will enable you to further develop your personal vision. You will also develop an understanding of photographic aesthetics and demonstrate that knowledge during group and peer critiques. Must be taken A-F.

Advanced Photographic Software (PHDI 2110)

Description:  This course is a continuation of the skills learned in Intro to Photographic Software. You will use Adobe Photoshop to employ a variety of professional post-production skills such as advanced selection and outlining, compositing, layer effects and advanced color and tonal correction. You will also learn about color management and image output through large format inkjet printers.

Description:  This studio course covers the basics of professional portrait photography. You will explore the ins and outs of people photography as you develop interpersonal communication skills and photographer-to-subject rapport; learn lighting and posing techniques for individual, environmental and group portraits; and examine portrait applications in the professional marketplace and the equipment requirements needed to succeed in the portrait photography industry. Upon completing this course, you will have a portrait portfolio consisting of children, groups, couples, individuals and environmental portraits. Description:  This course covers the creative and exciting area of fashion and model photography. You will develop timing and rapport with your subjects and utilize a wide array of lighting techniques both in the studio and on location. You will work with professional models and source models through local model agencies. The course will explore the legal aspects of fashion photography such as consent, release forms and compensation. You will also prepare fashion narratives and model portfolios.

Description:  This course offers a hands-on opportunity to learn the operation and application of the 4x5 view camera. Motion and Sound for Photographers (PHDI 2180)

Description:  This course provides Photography and Digital Imaging students with the basic production skills necessary to produce digital media presentations involving motion, sound and still photography. You will capture sound with external recording devices and capture HD video and still images with digital SLRs. You will use video and audio editing software to integrate your captured media assets into short presentations compatible with a variety of media delivery systems.
