Description:  This course provides an in-depth exploration of the history, structure, and principles of typography, with a focus on the special considerations of designing with type. You will engage with traditional elements of typography, including form, spacing, layout, color, mixing fonts, and the integration of type with images. Must be taken A-F.
Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052

Layout and Design (GRPH 1120)

Description:  This course serves as a foundation to design by exploring basic design theory and creative problem-solving. You will learn design fundamentals using both traditional and digital media while exploring the relationship between images, typography, and other visual elements while developing layouts for the new media environment. Must be taken A-F.
Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052. It is strongly recommended that students either place into MATH 0070 or successfully complete MATH 0060.

Introduction to Graphics Software (GRPH 1130)

Description:  This course introduces the basics of graphic design while utilizing industry standard software. You will design using a Mac or PC computer while working within a prescribed set of design specifications using type, image, and graphics. You will create graphic design projects that reflect the creative industry on a basic level. Must be taken A-F.
Prerequisites:  Placement into READ 1300 or completion of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052. It is recommended that students can type 25 words per minute.

Description:  This course introduces color theory, its application, and affect on design. You will learn about the psychology and perceptional parameters of color. You will explore the theory and history of a variety of color systems. You will develop the ability to use and manage color effectively in creative applications. Must be taken A-F.

Description:  This course provides a practical understanding of the knowledge and skills required of digital content creators to use Photoshop in today's digital design studio. Description:  This course is an introduction to Adobe InDesign software, the industry standard for designing professional single- and multiple-page documents for print, and other electronic delivery systems. You will engage with the software’s core functionalities and advanced features through practical projects. You will also learn the fundamentals of style sheets, global and local page management, importing and formatting document assets, advanced typographic controls, color management, preflight and output options as applied to practical projects for commercial and digital printing and electronic publishing. Must be taken A-F.

Description:  This course provides specific experiences that focus on the technical and aesthetic issues of typographic form in communication design. Emphasis is on the inventive use of type and typography throughout the whole creative process, from concept to application. You will recall the fundamental principles of typographic form and explain their relevance in communication design. You will apply traditional typographical aesthetics and merge them with current electronic technologies to develop innovative typographical solutions. Through practical assignments, you will analyze the effectiveness of your typographic choices in various contexts, evaluate your designs for print, digital, and corporate identity projects, and create comprehensive typographic solutions that demonstrate your understanding and creativity. Description:  This course covers the skills of refining and adapting artwork for cohesiveness and inclusion in a professional portfolio. You will demonstrate advanced creative and production skills as related to your individualized course project in order to produce a professional design portfolio and capstone show.
