Description:  This course surveys the history, organization, personnel and functions of libraries and information agencies in Minnesota and throughout the United States. You will learn about major theories, ideas and trends relevant to the field. You will discuss various job opportunities that exist in information agencies and allied fields. You will have opportunities to build your professional network and develop your career plan.
Prerequisites:  Placement into ENGL 1110 or completion of ENGL 0900 or ENGA 0900 or ESOL 0051 or Instructor Approval

Technical Services (LIBT 1200)

Description:  This course surveys library technical services: acquisitions, collection development, resource management (with a special attention paid to electronic resources and government documents), cataloging and metadata practice, and collection management. You will understand the role of technical services in the operations of a library or information agency; and how libraries work together to do cooperative work in consortia and associations. You will understand how automation, technology, and vendors interact with people working in technical services operations. You will explore ethical considerations for policies and procedures utilized in technical services work. You will develop knowledge and skill to apply to technical services work.

Public and Customer Services (LIBT 1300)

Description:  This course surveys library and information agency public services, including circulation, interlibrary loan, reserves, reference and research, and children's and young adult services. Emphasis will be placed on providing excellent customer service in each of these areas. You will explore the philosophy, policies, and procedures of each service area and how they interrelate.

Archives in Current Society (LIBT 1400)

Description:  This course surveys archival practices in acquisition, preservation, outreach, interpretation, access, and privacy. You will examine the role of archivists in shaping knowledge, history, and memory of past events, people, and places. You will explore the personal nature of memory, collections, and interpretation. You will learn theories of archival practice and how they shape the purpose and use of archival collections. You will learn about the American legal framework regarding indigenous artifacts and remains, and discuss how this legal framework impacts archival practice and historical interpretation in the United States.

Collection Organization and Metadata (LIBT 2200)

Description:  This course introduces cataloging and metadata practice in libraries or information agencies. You will apply descriptive cataloging and metadata standards to create original, and edit existing, bibliographic records in the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC.) You will be introduced to Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress classification schemes. You will use the Library of Congress Subject Headings and other controlled vocabularies for subject analysis of resources. You will be introduced to professional and ethical standards for cataloging, emphasizing user access to information.

Electronic Resources Management (LIBT 2215)

Description:  This course introduces electronic resource management in libraries or information agencies. You will explore electronic resource management through the work of acquisitions, collection management, discovery, and collection management. You will practice troubleshooting and resolving access issues with electronic resources. You will design a marketing plan to promote awareness and usage of electronic resources. You will consider how electronic resources are used and integrated into research and discovery systems. You will learn professional and ethical standards for electronic resource management, emphasizing user access to information.

Reference Services (LIBT 2300)

Description:  This course provides hands-on training in providing library reference services. You will learn how to conduct effective reference interviews, in order to help users define and meet their information needs. You will be introduced to major reference sources and when and how to use them. You will explore online reference services, reference programming, readers’ advisory services, reference services to children and young adults, and information literacy instruction. You will discuss ethical considerations in reference services and the future of library reference services.

Description:  This course examines community and outreach services provided by libraries of all types. You will explore how academic, public, and special libraries, as well as school media centers in the United States, build partnerships and serve their broader communities, with emphasis on those who are traditionally underserved.

Information Ethics and Legal Issues (LIBT 2500)

Description:  This course explores ethical and legal issues related to information use and dissemination in libraries and society. You will analyze and evaluate the library profession's stance on intellectual freedom and censorship; ethical and legal theories of information; professional ethics and law; copyright and intellectual property; and security and privacy issues.

Library/Information Agency Internship (LIBT 2900)

Total Credits:  3   Internship/Practicum Credits:  3
Description:  The internship provides structured on-the-job training in a library or information agency. You will work with a designated site coordinator at an approved library or information agency to design a custom work plan, allowing you to develop your practical skills. You will also develop a working resume, complete a mock job application, and participate in an instructor-led seminar throughout the semester which will include a virtual or in person site visit. Must be taken Pass/No Credit. Please contact the course instructor to discuss internship placement options.
Prerequisites:  LIBT 2200 and LIBT 2300 or Instructor Approval
