Beginning Somali 1 (SOMI 1000)

Description:  Beginning Somali provides an introduction to the language and cultures of Somali, and introduces you to contemporary Somali language, including the written alphabet and sound system. You will develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to communicate about self, family and daily life, as well as basic survival needs. You will also explore history and cultural aspects of the Somali-speaking world.

Beginning Somali 2 (SOMI 1100)

Description:  This course is a continuation of SOMI 1000 and is also appropriate for the student who has completed one semester of Somali. You will learn the use of past-tense structures and pronoun usage. You will continue to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary to communicate about self, family, and daily life, as well as abstract concepts such as feelings and emotions. You will also explore history and cultural aspects of the Somali-speaking world.
Prerequisites:  SOMI 1000 or Instructor Approval

Somali Civilization and Culture (SOMI 1400)

Total Credits:  3   Lecture Credits:  3  
Description:  This course acquaints you with aspects of the culture and civilization of the Somali-speaking peoples. The course will be taught in English, and topics will be selected from among the areas of the arts, literature, and history to allow you to gain an awareness of cultural, social, religious, and linguistic aspects of the target culture. You will develop an understanding of the responsibility world citizens share for their common global future by comparing and contrasting your own culture with that of Somali-speaking peoples. You do not need to know Somali language to take this course.
