Description:
This class focuses on the historical and contemporary cultures and issues of American Indians on this continent with special focus on Minnesota. You will learn about the earliest cultures in America, clashes with European contact, resistance movements, and legislation and policies. There will be special emphasis on the Ojibwe and Dakota nations. You will also learn about cultural contributions (such as music, literature, agriculture, dance and spirituality) and contemporary issues within Native America. You will develop critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills and apply these skills to specific course content. You will be given opportunities for civic engagement within the local Native American community.

Description:
This course is an introduction to the traditional and contemporary literature of Native American authors. You will study a range of works by American Indian/First Nations intellectuals, short story writers, novelists, playwrights, poets, and filmmakers. Description:
In this course you will be introduced to the concept of community from indigenous perspectives through nonprofit organizations, private consulting firms, advocacy groups, and government. You will examine the interconnected political, economic, and physical environments of social and cultural groups that maintain an identity, with a focus on Native American reservation and off-reservation communities. This course will include a service-learning component with a community different from your own.

Description:
The course will introduce students to the artistic expressions of Native Americans, ranging from traditional/tribal art to contemporary Native art, thus enhancing aesthetic appreciation and deepening understanding. Through lectures, visual presentations, gallery visits and guest speakers, you will be presented with a broad chronological, stylistic, and aesthetic organization of the study of North American Indian Art from prehistory to the present. The course places an emphasis on contextualizing art as cultural manifestation. You will look at the ways in which historical events influenced traditional forms and how they, in turn, continue to influence modern contemporary Native American art forms.

This course is a survey of the representation of Native peoples in cinema, television and popular culture. You will examine the presentation of Native peoples in classic and popular films. You will critique the accuracy of cultural depiction, the evolution of past and present stereotypes, and discuss trends in current media.
