Description:
This course provides an overview of the ancient systems of medicine including Greek, Ayurvedic, Native American and Traditional Chinese. Through comparison of various systems of medicine, you will learn how herbal medicine was developed as a part of a holistic approach to health and well-being. Beginning with the ancient systems, you will follow the historical thread to the holistic medicine movements in the United States from colonization to the current times.

Description:
In this course you will learn about the herbal medicine industry in the US and careers in the field through studying history, the herbal supplement industry, FDA rules and regulations for herbal supplements, the sustainability of medicinal plants, and laws regarding the practice of herbal medicine. You will develop strong research skills through a semester long research project on an endangered medicinal plant by critically examining information pertaining to historical and current use for its authenticity, bias, and credibility.

Description:
In this course, you will learn how herbal medicine can support health in specific life stages. You will discuss modern health concerns, focusing on traditional and contemporary herbal treatments that positively affect health throughout life. Through lectures, case studies and research, you will identify effective strategies for using herbs safely as well as how to change dosages for the age of the individual. You will study how herbal medicine works on organs systems in the body, including the respiratory, immune and reproductive systems.

Description:
This is a hands-on course providing techniques for harvesting and drying herbs and incorporating them into herbal products, such as decoctions, infusions, tinctures, lotions, steams, and salves. You will participate in field trips that include identification of medicinal herbs to develop an understanding of how and when individual herbs are harvested.

Description:
This course provides a comprehensive approach to Materia Medica focusing on 25 commonly used herbs. You will receive detailed information about the plants, encompassing both traditional and contemporary understanding of the key therapeutic actions, indications, constituents, cautions, contraindications, dosages and toxicity of each medicinal herb; alongside nomenclature, habitat, morphology and preparation of indicated forms of delivery of the medicinal herb. You will attend field trips to local natural areas to identify plants. You will be introduced to how herbal medicines work to promote health in the organ systems of the body, including the respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems.

Description:
Applications of Herbal Medicine 2 is the capstone course of the Herbal Studies certificate program. Building off skills learned in
HERB 1105, you will develop effective strategies in supporting the cardiovascular system as well as identifying herbs that support the balance and cleansing action of the body's liver, kidney and skin functions. The lab portion will consist of in-class exercises and field trips to help you gain experience using skills learned throughout the program.
