Description:
This course provides an overview for anyone who appreciates music and wants a better understanding of musical styles. You will learn techniques for listening to and describing music through investigation of musical elements and exploration of the influence of musical context. You will study significant musical compositions from the Western European art tradition, as well as music from the World’s cultures and music that has originated in or had significant influence on music in the United States – in part to help contextualize new and unfamiliar forms, and in part to help sharpen your listening skills. You will practice your newfound skills through discussion, listening, reading, and writing.

American Popular Music 1: The History and Development of Jazz (MUSC 1010)

Description:
This course traces the evolution of the “classical” music form of the United States known as jazz. Beginning with its European and African roots, you will study the precursors of work songs and the blues, to the many sub genres found today. You will gain an understanding of the immense diversity found in jazz and be able to identify key performers, composers, arrangers and performances of these styles. This course is suitable for those who consider themselves musicians, as well as for those who only play the radio. The course is taught through audio/video examples, lectures, and discussions with an emphasis on the interrelatedness of jazz and United States history and culture.

American Popular Music 2: The History and Development of Rock 'n' Roll (MUSC 1020)

This course surveys America's popular musical form, Rock and Roll, from its European and African roots through its precursors found in the blues, to the many sub genres such as Heavy Metal, Neo-Soul, Punk, and Hip Hop. By tracing the evolution of rock and Pop music, you can expect to gain an understanding of the immense diversity found in these forms and to be able to identify key performers and performances of the styles included. The course is taught through audio/video examples, lectures, and discussions with an emphasis on the interrelatedness of Rock styles and United States history and culture.

Description:
This course presents an overview of the music of four major cultural groups representing Asia, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean and native North America. In this course, you will learn to explore the music of these groups to compare and contrast musical genres, as well as relate the music to each culture's values, beliefs, and sense of identity. You will accomplish this through readings, lectures and discussion both in class and on line. Audio and visual examples will be provided. You will also learn to perform songs from each group.

This course provides an introduction to the history of music therapy and the application of music in the therapeutic treatment of a variety of populations. If you are interested in a career in music therapy, this course is designed to help you decide if it is right for you. Description:
Founded on a basic understanding of the foundation of musical notation, harmony, and rhythm, this course will begin an examination of the structure of tonal music, as expressed primarily in Western Art Music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Through composition and analysis, you will develop a theoretical and practical fluency with notation, intervals, chords, inversions, voice leading, and harmonic progression. You will recognize, understand, and internalize what makes tonal music work, be able to discuss it usefully, and to apply these ideas to musicianship, in whatever form that takes. Beyond this, you will become a better musician through sight-singing and ear training, putting theoretical ideas about melody, rhythm, and harmony into practice.

It is open to all students and no audition is necessary. The choir performs at least one major concert per semester. Description:
This ensemble prepares and performs music in the Western Art and Folk music traditions. You will work in groups as small as duets and as large as the total class size, learning repertoire created for smaller ensembles. You will perform publicly at least once per semester. This group rehearses a minimum of two times per week or a minimum of 100 minutes per week.
Prerequisites:
Students must be able to read music at an intermediate level or better and provide their own instrument, with the exception of a piano. While it is not mandatory, an applied lesson on the student's instrument is highly recommended.

Description:
This ensemble prepares and performs music from contemporary and jazz-rock styles. You will perform publicly at least once per semester, using arrangements that are designed primarily for small jazz combos rather than Big Band. You will perform publicly at least once per semester. This group rehearses a minimum of two times per week or a minimum of 100 minutes per week.
Prerequisites:
Students must be able to read music at an intermediate level or better and provide their own instrument, with the exception of piano. While it is not mandatory, an applied lesson on the student's instrument is highly recommended.

Description:
This course will expand topics covered in
MUSC 1175: Music Theory and Ear Training I. Continuing with an understanding of the foundation of musical notation, harmony, and rhythm, this course will begin an examination of the structure of tonal music, as expressed primarily in the styles and genres of 19th century.
